ZOOL. Espèce d'antilope pygmée d'Afrique du Sud (famille des Bovidés) au pelage fauve et aux cornes droites et lisses (les femelles n'en possèdent pas). Le Steinbok des Boers (...), de l'Afrique, du Cap au Kilimandjaro, est une espèce des plus connues (Encyclop. Sc. Techn. t. 1 1969, p. 765, s.v. artiodactyles). Le Steenbock d'Afrique méridionale et orientale a une robe uniforme et ne possède pas de sabots latéraux (Tous les Animaux de l'Univers, Paris, UNIDE, t. 2, 1982, p. 122, s.v. antilopes pygmées).

Étymol. et Hist. 1791 steen-bok « petite antilope d'Afrique australe » (VALM. 4e éd., Lyon, t. 9, p. 169, s.v. nagor); 1904 steinbock (Nouv. Lar. ill.). Empr., prob. par l'intermédiaire de l'angl. (1775 steenbock ds NED), au néerl. d'Afrique du Sud steenbock, transpos. du terme néerl. désignant le bouquetin. L'all. corresp. Steinbock (v. bouquetin étymol.) a été empr. par l'angl. pour désigner le bouquetin (1683-84 ds NED) et la collision entre les deux termes explique sans doute l'empl. de la forme steinbock pour désigner cette antilope. VALM., loc. cit., donne steinbock au sens de « bouquetin », mais ceci ne corresp. pas à l'usage du français.
